The colours of winter

February crept up on us
In the guise of winter blues
As we sat frigid and cold
Eyes peeled to the news.
Still no closer to freedom
And too tired to fight
We clung to each other for comfort
As days turned to night.

But then our misery was broken
Albeit - just a spell
Heads tilted up in awe
As soft snowflakes fell.
As far as the eye could see
A thick blanket of white
The silence was finally broken
With squeals of delight!

Emerging slowly from our houses
For the first time in a while
My dry, cracked lips turned upwards
To form a gentle smile.

As the icy fields melted
And sludge turned to sleet
I whispered a thank you to God
For that much needed treat.
